Oda injured knee, sources confirm

Figure skater Nobunari Oda was diagnosed earlier this week with a partial tear of his left patella tendon, sources said Saturday.

Oda will need about six weeks of complete rest but is expected to recover in time for the 2011-12 season, according to his doctor.

Oda felt pain in his left knee during last month’s world championships in Moscow, where he placed second after the short program but ended up in sixth.

He was also bothered by inflammation in the knee in January.

“I just kept on skating without proper treatment,” Oda said. “Now I’m supposed to be starting work on the new program, but my doctor told me that I’ll need surgery if I push myself further.”

Also on Saturday, top Japanese figure skating official Hidehito Ito said the country plans to hold a training camp this September in Sochi, Russia, the venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
