Swimmer Takeshi Matsuda on Wednesday welcomed the Japan Swimming Federation’s decision to send individual gold medalists at this summer’s world championships to the 2012 London Olympics.
“A gold medal (at the worlds) now has extra value and this is a great motivator,” the men’s 200-meter butterfly Beijing Olympic bronze medalist told reporters upon his return from high altitude training in Arizona.
Matsuda, who will be gunning for a berth to the July 16-31 worlds in Shanghai at the national championships in April, started his three-week training camp earlier than usual and was pleased with his efforts.
“I pushed myself constantly. I think I have created a solid base to build on,” said Matsuda.
