Former sekiwake Tosanoumi announced his retirement from sumo on Wednesday at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
The 38-year-old Tosanoumi hangs up his mawashi with 11 kinboshi — victories over yokozuna by lower-ranked wrestlers — in his career, the fourth highest number of all time.
He had a 4-11 record at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in November as the No. 8 juryo. Tosanoumi will inherit the new name of Tatekawa to become a coach at the Isenoumi stable.
"I couldn't fight well anymore and I felt my limitations, physically," Tosanoumi said. "I've had a long career and I think I've done everything I can."
Tosanoumi's retirement ceremony will be held May 28 at Ryogoku Kokugikan. He made his debut at the spring basho in 1994 and kept his place in the makuuchi division for 80 tournaments, the ninth highest number in sumo history.
