Defender Maya Yoshida tasted defeat on his debut for VVV Venlo on Saturday as Keisuke Honda's former club crashed to a 5-3 defeat at home to FC Groningen in the Dutch first division.

Playing in his first competitive match since his move from Nagoya Grampus, Yoshida had a hand in Venlo's third goal after coming on with quarter of an hour left, but the game by that time was already out of reach after Koen Van de Laak's 75th-minute strike had put Groningen ahead 5-2.

Yoshida joined Venlo in January but spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken metatarsal in his left foot during a training camp in Turkey just three days after arriving from Japan.

Elsewhere, some excellent work from World Cup midfielder Yuki Abe set Paul Gallagher up to fire the winner as Leicester City edged Preston North End 1-0 in the second-tier English Championship.
