World No. 1 Serena Williams has pulled out of the upcoming Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo because of a slow recovery after surgery on her right foot, tournament organizers said Thursday.
The reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, who also missed the recently concluded U.S. Open because of the foot problem, was to headline a strong field in what would have been her debut at the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 event at Ariake Tennis Forest Park.
Wimbledon runnerup Vera Zvonareva and French Open champion Francesca Schiavone are also entered in the $2 million event. Two-time tournament winner Maria Sharapova is returning to defend her title.
