Japanese Moto2 racer Shoya Tomizawa will be posthumously awarded the Michel Metraux trophy for the best rider in the category and will have his No. 48 retired from racing as one of a number of tributes, MotoGP said on its website Friday.

Tomizawa, 19, tragically lost his life following a horror crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy earlier this month.

Championship leader Toni Elias suggested ahead of this weekend's event in Aragon, Spain, that his fellow riders vote for Tomizawa as the recipient of this season's Michel Metraux trophy, and they did so unanimously.

The trophy will be presented to Tomizawa's family at the Japan Grand Prix on Oct. 3.
