Kim to sit out Grand Prix series

Olympic women’s figure skating gold medalist Kim Yu Na will not compete in the upcoming Grand Prix series but focus instead on next year’s world championships, Yonhap news agency reported Monday.

Yonhap quoted Kim as saying Monday at Incheon International Airport, “I didn’t start training yet, but I’ll focus on the world championships. After the ice show, I’ll make up a schedule with the coaching staff and select the programs.”

Kim is back in South Korea from Toronto to participate in an ice show.

According to Yonhap, Kim has also decided to miss the Winter Asian Games scheduled to begin Jan. 30 in Kazakhstan.

The 2011 world championships will be held in Tokyo in March.

A month after winning Olympic gold in Vancouver with a world record score, Kim finished second behind Mao Asada at the world championships in Turin, Italy.
