Judo coach targets triple gold haul

Determined to avoid an embarrassing showing on home soil, men’s national team coach Shinichi Shinohara wants Japan’s judoka to win at least three gold medals at the world championships in Tokyo in September.

Not the dominant force they once were, Japan’s men suffered the ignominy of failing to win a world championship gold medal for the first time at last summer’s event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

“We want at least three gold medals,” former world champion Shinohara said Sunday at a training camp at Tokyo’s national training center. “We don’t want to mess up and end up without any gold medals again.”
