YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) Reigning Olympic triathlon champion Jan Frodeno of Germany produced a daring breakaway on the bike and had a solid run to win the men's gold medal at the ITU World Championship Series leg in Yokohama on Sunday.

Frodeno claimed victory with a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes, 31 seconds, well clear of New Zealander Kris Gemmel, who finished runnerup 18 seconds back.

Spain's Javier Gomez was third in 1:44:52 while Hirokatsu Tayama had the best finish by a Japanese triathlete in finishing 13th in 1:47:02.
