Masaya Tomida shot a sizzling 9-under 62 to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Kansai Open on Thursday.

Tomida, who earned his first career win at the Tsuruya Open this past April, reeled off 10 birdies against one bogey in the event that returned to the JGTO Tour schedule after 17 years of absence.

The 31-year-old, starting his round on the 10th, birdied five of his first six holes and added five more on the outward nine while making a bogey on the seventh at Takarazuka Golf Club.

Komei Oda, Tetsuji Hiratsuka and Kiyoshi Miyazato shared second place, followed by Hiroo Kawai, who sat four shots off the lead after a 66.

Defending champion Ryo Ishikawa got off to a slow start with a 75 after becoming the youngest player to make the cut in PGA Championship history last week in Chaska, Minnesota.
