BELGRADE (Kyodo) Backstroker Ryosuke Irie, a medal hopeful at the upcoming world swimming championships in Rome, helped Japan win the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay at the University Games on Saturday.
The team of Irie, Hiromasa Sakimoto, Irie’s elder brother Shimpei and Ranmaru Harada set a Games record of 3 minutes, 32.80 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 3:36.17 set by Russia in 2007.
Italy finished 2.95 behind Japan in second place. France was third 2.56 further back.
Also on Saturday, Japan defeated South Korea in the women’s team judo final, while the Japanese men lost to Russia in the team judo semifinals before beating Mongolia in the third-place match.
