KOBE (Kyodo) J. League club Vissel Kobe are in negotiations to re-sign Japan striker Yoshito Okubo from German champions VfL Wolfsburg, team official Masahiro Wada revealed Saturday.

“We have heard the player himself say he wants to come back and for Kobe, adding Okubo would be a major boost to the squad,” said Wada. “All that’s left is to see if we can reach an agreement on a transfer fee.”

Okubo’s move to Germany from Kobe in January provided him with a second chance to prove himself in European soccer after his disappointing stint with Spanish club Real Mallorca.

But the 26-year-old, who joined Wolfsburg on a contract running through June 2011, was limited to just nine league appearances and failed to score a single goal in the Bundesliga.
