FUKUROI, Shizuoka Pref. (Kyodo) Chisato Fukushima won the women's 200 meters in a national record 23.14 seconds at the Shizuoka International athletics meet Sunday.

Fukushima edged out rival Momoko Takahashi by 0.01 and broke the previous record of 23.33 set by Sakie Nobuoka at the 2004 national championships.

Fukushima, who was the first Japanese woman to compete in an Olympic 100-meter race in 56 years at the Beijing Games last summer, improved her personal best by 0.01 in the 200 preliminaries earlier in the day and by 0.37 in the final at Ecopa Stadium.

The 20-year-old, however, did not show excitement about her record-breaking run, only saying, "My coach had told me that I would set a record. I feel good."
