NEW YORK (Kyodo) The New York Mets have added veteran left-hander Ken Takahashi to their major league roster and designated left-handed reliever Casey Fossum for assignment, Mets officials said Sunday.

Takahashi, who signed with the Mets on a minor league contract after the Toronto Blue Jays released him late last month, was scheduled to join the team for Monday's game against the Florida Marlins.

At 40 years old, he will become the oldest Japanese player to make his debut in the major leagues.

"My efforts in the minors have paid off and I am pleased and feel happy but it is not this promotion that I had been aiming for. I am finally at the starting point."
