FUKUOKA (Kyodo) Tomoko Fukumi denied rival Emi Yamagishi a repeat in the women’s judo 48-kg final Sunday, winning her second title on the final day of the national weight-class invitational championships.
Fukumi, who stunned Beijing Olympic champion Alina Dumitru of Romania to win the Grand Prix Hamburg meet in February, defeated Yamagishi on points to capture her first title in two years at the meet, which doubled as a final qualifier for the world championships.
In men’s action, Kazuhiko Takahashi took the crown in the men’s over-100 kg, while tournament favorite Yasuyuki Muneta crashed out in the semifinals. Takamasa Anai, meanwhile, won the title in the men’s 100-kg category for the first time in four years.
