KADOMA, Osaka Pref. (Kyodo) Japan clinched a spot in the third round of the Davis Cup after beating China in a doubles match for its third straight win in the zonal meeting on Saturday.
Satoshi Iwabuchi and Takao Suzuki prevailed 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 over Zeng Shaoxuan and Zhang Ze at Namihaya Dome sub arena in the second round of Asia/Oceania Group 1.
The pair took control with a solid rhythm from the first set and carried the momentum on Iwabuchi’s precise returns and aggressive net play by Suzuki.
Kei Nishikori, who won a singles match the previous day despite nursing a right elbow injury, will sit out the singles on the final day of competition on Sunday and be replaced by Suzuki.
Japan will take on the winner of the match-up between South Korea and Uzbekistan in the third round as it aims to advance to the World Group promotion/relegation playoff from May 8-10.
