HAKUBA, Nagano Pref. (Kyodo) Hideaki Nagai overcame a sluggish start in the jumping portion with an explosive 10-km cross country leg en route to winning his first Nordic combined national title on Friday.

The 25-year-old Nagai, who started 1 minute, 6 seconds behind ski jumping leader Takashi Kitamura, overtook 11 skiers in the cross country leg.

Kitamura, who had a superb leap of 95 meters, finished 14.9 seconds behind Nagai, while Takahiro Kubo was third, 32.4 seconds back.

Reruhi Shimizu had the day’s longest leap of 96.5 meters, but fell off the pace in the cross country leg to place 35th.
