Miyamoto leaves Salzburg for Kobe

KOBE (Kyodo) Vissel Kobe has signed former Japan captain Tsuneyasu Miyamoto from Austrian club Salzburg, officials of the J. League first-division club said Thursday.

The 31-year-old central defender is set to be unveiled by his new club at a Tokyo press conference after arriving back in Japan on Friday.

Miyamoto joined Gamba Osaka through the club’s youth system in 1995 and went on to make 295 league appearances for the 2005 J. League champion. He signed for Salzburg in December 2006 on a one-year deal with an option for another season.

In December 2007, the two-time World Cup defender signed a new contract with Salzburg through June 2009 but he suffered a serious hamstring injury at the start of last year and has failed to play a single league game this season.
