NAGOYA (Kyodo) Chunichi Dragons right-hander Kenshin Kawakami will exercise his right to become a free agent with an eye on a move to the major leagues or another domestic club.

Sources close to the 33-year-old Kawakami said Sunday that he wishes to leave Chunichi after meeting the requirement of being on the top-team roster for nine years in order to become eligible for a move to an overseas team.

The sources said that Kawakami is leaning toward a move to the majors rather than play for another Japanese club, but added that he is still seriously contemplating his decision.

Chunichi club president Junnosuke Nishikawa made a tentative offer of a four-year deal in a meeting with Kawakami in early September to try to entice him to remain with team but he was not convinced.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
