Asa expected to see shrink today

Stressed-out grand champion Asashoryu is set to see a psychiatrist to help cope with his tattered mental state after he was handed a severe punishment of suspension from two grand sumo tournaments, sumo sources said Saturday. Asashoryu, who is ensconced in his home on house restriction, has apparently been making requests to return to his homeland Mongolia because of his shaky condition, but the Japan Sumo Association appears unwilling to let the 26-year-old have his way. He is scheduled to see a psychiatrist at his home on Sunday and his attending doctor has suggested that he return to Mongolia soon in order to calm his nerves. “It is premature to let him go (to Mongolia) now,” said his stable elder Takasago. “We have to wait until things settle down before he is allowed to go to Mongolia.” Sumo sources said, however, Asashoryu might be granted permission to travel home based on his psychological diagnosis.
