Ex-Japan coach Shukuzawa dies

Hiroaki Shukuzawa, the most successful coach of the Japan national rugby team, died of a heart attack on Saturday at age 55.

Shukuzawa became Japan’s national coach in 1989 and surprised the rugby world with a 28-24 win over Scotland in his first game in charge. The highlights of his coaching career, which ended in late 1991, also included a 52-8 victory over Zimbabwe in the 1991 World Cup — Japan’s only win thus far in rugby’s showcase tournament.
