KOBE – WBC bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa said Friday he will defend his title for the third time in a match against top contender Genaro Garcia of Mexico at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on July 15.
Hasegawa, who defeated Veeraphol Nakhonluang-Promotion by technical knockout in March for his second successful title defense, has a record of 20-2 with seven KOs. Garcia is 35-4 with 20 KOs.
The Japanese boxer said he aims to prove he is the true champion in his fight against Garcia.
“He had hoped for this No. 1 ranking, so all I have to do now is give all my strength to win,” said Hasegawa.
