Backstroke swimmer Aya Terakawa gave Japan its first gold medal and the Japanese men's gymnastics team followed with another at the University Games on Saturday.

Terakawa, who placed eighth in the 200 backstroke at the Athens Olympics last summer, won the women's 50-meter backstroke in a personal-best 29.06 seconds.

In the men's gymnastics team event, Hiroyuki Tomita, Takehito Mori, Shun Kuwahara, Takehiro Kashima and Ryosuke Baba gave Japan its first gold in the discipline in six years by collecting a total of 168.209 points.

South Korea won silver and China took bronze.
