Shohei Tateyama tossed a three-hitter over eight strong innings Sunday as the Yakult Swallows edged the Rakuten Golden Eagles 3-2 in interleague play.
Tateyama, who improved to 4-1, struck out five at Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium while giving up one run and walking none in a 92-pitch effort. Hirotoshi Ishii recorded the final three outs in the ninth for his 13th save of the season.
Akinori Iwamura led the Yakult attack, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as the Swallows won the final game of the three-game series after losing the first two.
Rakuten catcher Takeshi Yamasaki, who had a pair of homers in Saturday’s 3-1 win, connected for a solo homer in the top of the ninth before Ishii got the final out.
Yakult went into Sunday’s games tied for first place with the Chunichi Dragons in the Central League standings and improved to 17-9 in interleague games.
Buffaloes 7, Carp 4
At Hiroshima Stadium, Arihito Muramatsu drove in three-runs with a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth to lead Orix to victory.
Pinch-hitter Shinji Shimo-yama chipped in with a solo homer in the eighth and an RBI single in the ninth as the Buffaloes completed a three-game sweep of the Carp, who have lost five straight games.
Orix reliever Ryota Katsuki picked up the win after coming on in the seventh and giving up one run on one hit. Masanobu Okubo retired the side in the ninth for the save.
BayStars 4, Lions 1
At Invoice Seibu Dome, Hitoshi Tamura drove in a pair of runs as Yokohama scored three runs in the top of the ninth.
Yokohama reliever Atsushi Kizuka picked up the win after working a scoreless eighth and closer Marc Kroon retired the side in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.
Dragons 7, Fighters 6
At Nagoya Dome, Alex Ochoa hit a three-run homer as Chunichi erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Fernando Seguignol hit three-run homers in the first and third innings respectively to give Hokkaido Nippon Ham a 6-0 lead before the Dragons rallied in the fifth. Chunichi has won four straight.
The Fighters are winless in their last seven games, including two ties.
Tigers 1, Marines 1 (12)
At Koshien Stadium, Osamu Hamanaka drove in a game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Hanshin and Chiba Lotte tied.
Matt Franco drove in a run in the third for the Pacific League-leading Marines and Shunsuke Watanabe held the Tigers scoreless until the eighth.
Both teams were held hitless in the final four innings.
Hawks 4, Giants 1
At Tokyo Dome, Naoyuki Omura hit a clutch, two-out double in the top of the ninth inning to lead Softbank to a win over Yomiuri.
Omura’s bases-loaded double to right scored Kenji Jojima and Julio Zuleta as the Hawks took two out of three from the Giants.
Softbank was up 2-0 after two innings courtesy of an RBI single by Nobuhiko Matsunaka and a Homare Inamine sacrifice fly.
