Kokushikan high school senior Satoshi Ishii pulled off a surprise victory for his first title in the men's 100-kg category at the Kodokan Cup national weight-class judo championships on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Ishii, fresh from winning the world junior crown in Hungary last month, beat Tenri University's Takamasa Anai with an "osotogari" leg sweep 3 minutes, 2 seconds into the final at Chiba Port Arena to become only the third high school champion in tournament history.

Elsewhere in the men's tournaments, Athens Olympian Masahiko Tomouchi won his first title in the 81-kg class, Yusuke Kanemaru won his first title in four years at 73 kg and Tatsuaki Egusa captured his first title in two years at 60 kg.

The Kodokan Cup serves as a domestic qualifier for next year's world championships in Cairo.
