Japan's Chikara Tanabe missed out on the chance of a gold medal after he was defeated by American Stephan Abas in the semifinals of the men's 55-kg freestyle competition at the Athens Olympics on Saturday.

Tanabe, who finished in 10th in Sydney four years ago, was dominated by Abas, who tackled him as the clocked ticked down in the six-minute match to win a 3-0 decision at Ano Liossia Olympic Hall. "I gave it all the power I had and it wasn't enough," said Tanabe. "I looked for an opening but couldn't find one. Abas was superior," added Tanabe, who will face Greece's Amiran Karntanov in the bronze medal match later on Saturday.
