BEJING – Japanese teenager Ai Fukuhara booked her ticket to this summer’s Athens Olympics after defeating Hong Kong’s Lau Sui-fei in the final phase of the Asian zone qualifying tournament in Beijing on Saturday.
Fukuhara, ranked 25th in the world, posted wins over India’s Mouma Das (4-0) and North Korean Kim Yun Mi (4-1) before securing one of the seven berths for Greece up for grabs by beating world No. 13 Lau 4-1 in the women’s singles competition. On Friday, Koji Matsushita secured his fourth straight Olympic appearance, while Ryo Yuzawa and Shu Arai also booked their tickets to Greece after all three finished top of their groups in the men’s preliminary competition.
