Yokohama F. Marinos defeated Shanghai Kokusai 2-1 on Saturday but had to settle for the runnerup spot on the final day of the annual "A3" East Asian Champions Cup in Shanghai.

Japan striker Tatsuhiko Kubo struck the winner on the hour as Yokohama came from a goal down but its efforts proved fruitless as South Korean club Seongnam Ilhwa secured the title later in the day after a 1-1 draw with Shanghai Shenhua.

Seongnam, a 3-0 winner over Yokohama in the opening match last Sunday, finished top with seven points with Yokohama in second, another point behind.

The four-team tournament featured the club champions of Japan, South Korea and China as well as Chinese League runnerup Shanghai International.

J. League club Kashima Antlers won the inaugural East Asian Champions Cup in Tokyo last year.
