The Urawa Reds said Tuesday they have reached a basic agreement with former German international defender Guido Buchwald to make him the new coach of the J. League first division side beginning Feb. 1, 2004.
The 42-year-old Buchwald, who played for Urawa for three-and-a-half years until 1997, is due to sign a contract which will run through Jan. 2, 2005, while former Purple Sanga coach Gert Engels of Germany will become an assistant coach.
