Regarding the April 18 front-page Kyodo article "Ishihara seeking to buy Senkaku Islands" (from the landowner): Whose tax money would Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara spend to do this? And would he do this without a referendum?

Who could object? asks Ishihara. Answer: Almost any citizen who would like to think that local politicians should be tackling serious local issues instead of overstepping their mandate and acting like buffoons at the international level.

editor's Note: The Uninhabited Senkaku Islands, In The East China Sea, Are Ruled By Japan But Also Claimed By China And Taiwan.
