As a Japanese Exchange Teaching (JET) Program assistant language teacher in rural Okayama Prefecture, I strive to make children excited about learning English. Even if their ability is poor, the Japanese teachers who make a conscientious effort to use English by conversing with me or asking the class questions during an English lesson or during “Japanese” portions of the class will motivate the students.
I can teach the students proper pronunciation and grammar while the Japanese teachers can show the students that if they, as fellow Japanese, can speak English, then the students certainly can too. I sincerely hope that Japanese teachers and adults can overcome their fear of English and simply use it.
