Regarding Kazuaki Nagata’s July 10 article, “Market booming in digital publishing“: I attended the same digital publishing seminar and was amused that Nagata’s comment — that the market drivers were “comics for young people as well as adult content” — was buried at the bottom of the story.
Every speaker and every handout seemed to emphasize that “adult content” is a major driver. One statistic we were given during the seminar said adult content accounted for over half of top-selling genres for content providers in the survey. I’m fairly certain this proliferation of porn in digital publishing is unique to Japan. The seminar left me mulling more sociocultural issues than business ones.
In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
