The assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a campaign speech has sent shock waves not only across Japan but around the world.
Both Japanese and foreign leaders have voiced anger and disbelief over the brutality of the attack, all the while expressing solidarity with the Japanese people and praising the character and legacy of one of the most consequential leaders in Japan’s postwar history.
In a televised speech, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he was “deeply saddened and lost for words” over Abe’s death. “We lost a great leader who loved the nation, looked to the future and made great achievements in various fields for the future of this country,” he said.
