The mercury hit 35 degrees Celsius in the city of Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, on Sunday, marking the first “extremely hot” day in Japan this year, according to the Meteorological Agency.

Takasaki logged the temperature at 12:54 p.m. Extremely hot days are defined as those when temperatures rise to 35 degrees or higher.
