Japan reported more than 30,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday — a record high — as the central government prepares to put Tokyo and other prefectures under quasi-emergency measures amid the rapid spread of the omicron variant.

The total tally, which was still adding up Tuesday evening, has surpassed the previous record of 25,990 reported on Aug. 20 last year.
