Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday that he looks forward to working together to realize a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” with the two agreeing during their first talks to continue bolstering security ties.

During the roughly 40-minute phone talks, the leaders welcomed recent cooperation between their countries, including France’s Jeanne d’Arc training fleet visiting Japan for joint exercises in May, according to the Foreign Ministry.
