Major electronics makers’ labor unions will keep seeking monthly pay-scale hikes of at least ¥1,000 in the ongoing annual shuntō wage negotiations, according to industry sources.

Most major Japanese companies are scheduled to give their replies to demands from their unions on Wednesday. Negotiations are likely to continue until the very last minute of the respective deadlines.

The labor and management sides of electronics makers agreed monthly pay-scale increases in the past seven years.

The Japanese Electrical, Electronic & Information Union, the umbrella body for labor unions of major electronics makers, decided at a central executive committee meeting Monday to go on strike unless all 13 key member unions win pay-scale hikes of ¥1,000 or more as they did the previous year.

“But it’s still uncertain whether all of them can receive replies (meeting the ¥1,000 minimum target),” committee chair Masashi Jinbo said during an online news conference.

Of the 13 unions, only six have obtained assurance for effective pay-scale hikes of at least ¥1,000. They are unions at Hitachi Ltd., Panasonic Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp..

The remaining unions are trying to achieve the minimum target after their companies agreed on hikes of ¥500 or more.

The umbrella union plans to allow member unions to settle with varied hikes for the second consecutive year, if agreed increases reach a certain amount, informed sources said.

Wage negotiations have also entered the final stage in the auto industry.

The labor union of the leading automaker Toyota Motor Corp. is seeking a monthly pay-scale hike of ¥9,200, down ¥900 from the previous shuntō demand.

Nissan Motor Co.’s union demands ¥7,000, also lower than its 2020 request.

Meanwhile, the unions of Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. refrained from requesting pay-scale hikes for the first time in eight years.

Negotiations at Honda ended after the management side agreed to pay annual bonuses equivalent to 5.3 months’ salary as demanded by its union.
