Globe-trotting Japanese cyclist dies in road accident in Peru

A Japanese man traveling around the world by bicycle died of a head injury after being hit by a truck Sunday in northwestern Peru, according to local news reports.

The accident took place on Sunday in the La Libertad region. The man was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

The victim is believed to be Fumihiko Sato, a 31-year-old former elementary school teacher from Sakura, Chiba Prefecture.

The Japanese Embassy in Lima confirmed that a Japanese man in his 30s had died in an accident.

Sato entered Peru on July 31 from Ecuador, according to the reports. Local police detained the 47-year-old truck driver.
