Feb. 22 is Cat Day in Japan as the date, 2-22, can sound like “nyan nyan nyan” (“meow, meow, meow”). While many people online are showing off the cutest photos of their fur babies, others are posting less-than-flattering pictures of their kitties with the hashtag #crappiest cat photo competition (猫の写真へたくそ選手権). It puts together Japan’s two favorite things: online competitions for crappy photos and, of course, cats.

After looking through piles of blurry messes, here are some of the highlights.

“My cat today. I think it’s focusing on something, if I’m not mistaken?”

“Its tongue is like sticky nattō.”

“My child is still a novice…”

“Our family’s Miru. Ah, so cute. I’m always taking photos. Miru is never interested.”

“It’s actually happy. Whenever I pet it, the white parts around its eyes come out. It kept purring and was so happy until it yawned.”

“I’m … wrapped up? I … can’t touch my favorite piece of rubber.”

“I found two yōkai (monsters).”

“Seriously, Dino-kun is a handsome cat … it’s just that I had bad timing taking this photo.”

“Daina the cat is happy. The cat’s reflexes are amazing. And it can stick the landing.”

“Although it may not be crappy, I took a photo of the weirdest face.”
