North Korea's Red Cross offers rare thanks to Japan for aiding boats in distress

JIJI

The central committee of North Korea’s Red Cross Society has expressed gratitude to Japanese authorities for aiding distressed seamen, the Korean Central News Agency has reported.

North Korea’s state-run news agency said Monday that the organization thanked Japan for providing humanitarian assistance numerous times in the past several years to North Korean people on boats in distress so that they can return home safely.

It is rare for a North Korean group to extend its gratitude to Japanese authorities.

Sources familiar with the North Korean situation said that the details behind the announcement, including the cases to which the organization is referring in the report, are unclear.
