Suzuki Motor Corp. said Monday that cumulative car production reached 20 million units in India.

After starting production there in December 1983, it took Suzuki 34 years and 5 months to reach the milestone, the fastest in any country outside Japan.

The most-produced model in India is the Alto, with roughly 3.17 million units, Suzuki said.

Production began through local subsidiary Maruti Udyog, the predecessor of Maruti Suzuki. Suzuki has a more than a 40 percent share of the Indian car market, now one of the world's largest.

Suzuki has three production factories in the country, with approximately 1.78 million units produced in fiscal 2017 ended in March.
