A mother who allegedly delivered and killed her newborn at a Tokyo manga cafe before dumping the corpse in a locker was arrested on Saturday, the police said.
Officers found the decomposing body of an infant who appeared to have been choked to death in the locker last month after unpleasant smells were reported coming from it.
Mao Togawa, 25, was detained on suspicion of abandoning a body, according to a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department. A murder charge is likely to follow because she has largely admitted the allegations, local media said.
Togawa told investigators she gave birth in January at a cafe where customers drink and read comic books in Shinjuku Ward’s Kabukicho entertainment district, the spokesman and reports said.
The suspect admitted killing the baby immediately “because she cried” and then put the body in a suitcase, which she then left in a nearby storage locker in Kabukicho, they said.
Police questioned the suspect after security camera footage showed her feeding coins into the locker to keep it closed.
