Typhoon Chanthu made landfall on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Wednesday afternoon after moving north off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan, causing heavy rain and disrupting traffic in extensive areas, the weather agency said.

The typhoon landed near Cape Erimo on the southeastern tip of the main island of Hokkaido at around 5:30 p.m., the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

As of 7 p.m., it was packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour with an atmospheric pressure of 982 hectopascals at its center.
