A power outage Thursday morning at an electrical substation in Kawasaki disrupted train services in the Tokyo metropolitan area, affecting some 240,000 commuters, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) said.

According to JR East, a total of 32 train services were canceled and 75 trains were delayed by up to two hours because of the power failure, which occurred at around 8:10 a.m.

The disruption hit the morning rush hour, causing heavy crowding at some stations as commuters sought information on when services would resume and alternative routes.

Firefighters said a fire had broken out at the Kawasaki substation, and JR East is investigating a possible link between the fire and power outage.

Trains resumed operations around 9:15 a.m.
