Several public schools resumed classes Monday in parts of Kumamoto hit hardest by twin quakes last month. The rest are set to reopen by midweek.

A total of 62 public elementary and junior high schools in Mashiki, Minamiaso and six other municipalities in the prefecture resumed classes Monday, while 111 others, including high schools and special schools, were set to restart in the next two days.

Some operations will remain disrupted because elementary and junior high school students must share buildings in some cases, and some will be forced to stay in dorms in order to attend class.
