The twin quakes that slammed Kyushu this month caused at least ¥23.6 billion of damage to agricultural and forestry businesses in Kumamoto Prefecture, the local government said Tuesday.

And that is not counting damage in the worst-hit areas, which the prefectural government has yet to survey. Likewise, it has been unable yet to put a figure on the cost to fisheries.

The quakes and their fearsome aftershocks ruptured canals and carved crevasses into fields, causing agricultural damage of around ¥7.8 billion. The figure includes damage to crops of around ¥30 million, as vegetables and fruit such as eggplants and tomatoes were ruined before harvest.
