Ailing Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej is recovering from lung and knee joint inflammation, the Royal Household Bureau has said in a statement.

The world's longest-reigning monarch has been in hospital since May 31 undergoing treatment for multiple illnesses. The king has mostly been confined to hospital since 2009.

His doctors said Sunday that the 88-year-old received antibiotics and oxygen after a recent X-ray showed inflammation in his left lung and right knee joint.

The latest examination showed an improvement in the lung and the knee, although the king still breathes at a higher rate than normal, the statement said. His pulse and blood pressure are normal, it added.

Thais celebrated his 88th birthday on Dec. 5.
