The younger brother of Texas Rangers star pitcher Yu Darvish has been charged by the Osaka District Public Prosecutor's Office with gambling and running a betting ring.

Prosecutors said Tuesday they are accusing Sho Darvish, 26, of running a pool in which people placed ¥10,000 bets on professional baseball games in Japan and the United States in May.

Darvish, who also bet in the pool, accepted wagers totaling roughly ¥9.4 million through the mobile phone app Line, the prosecutors alleged.

A source with knowledge of the investigation said Darvish has admitted to gambling, which is illegal, but denies organizing the ring.
