Scandal-hit Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. said Friday another 2,880 units of its vibration-damping products used in trains are suspect because they were either not tested or based on falsified data.

It then slashed its total for the scandal overall to 46,646 tainted items instead of 87,804, blaming miscalculations.

The Osaka-based company announced the figure after reviewing data from 1999 to 2004.

Earlier this month, it announced the initial results of its investigation into the past 10 years of data and stated the number of problematic units stood at 87,804. On Friday, it lowered that figure after adjusting for miscalculations and declared the new total was 46,646.

Improper practices have been found in relation to products made by subsidiary Toyo Chemical Industrial Products Co. in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture. There have been no reports of accidents or malfunctions linked to the products so far, the company said.

Toyo Tire became embroiled in a data-falsification scandal earlier this year after disclosing that shock-absorbing devices for earthquakes had been installed in more than 150 buildings across Japan, including hospitals and schools, even though their performance either failed to meet requirements or was unknown.
