A series of earthquakes registering 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 shook Tottori Prefecture on Sunday, raising fears among local residents.

The first quake hit at 8:30 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, followed by a temblor at 8:36 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.3, the Meteorological Agency said. They originated in central parts of the prefecture at a depth of around 10 km.

On Saturday evening, a similar spate of quakes hit the area.

Seismologist Ryohei Nishida of Tottori University said there is a high possibility the quakes were linked with each other. He added, however, that more quakes of that scale are unlikely.

No damage or injuries were reported following the quakes.
